I first off just want to say that I can’t believe we haven’t visited Mt. Charleston before this past weekend. I knew it wasn’t far from us and that it was amazing, but we just hadn’t made a trip up there yet. If you’re not big on reading the words in blog posts, then I’ll just tell you right here that Mt. Charleston is a-ma-zing! The weather, the views, the smells.. it was so refreshing!
So Mt. Charleston is a place known for it’s hiking and skiing and is snow-capped over half of the year! When we first moved to Las Vegas, I always saw a snow-capped mountain tucked away behind the other mountains closer to our house. Well, it was Mt. Charleston. It’s pretty crazy it can be 100+ degrees where we live and see snow-capped mountains. The day we visited, there was no snow, but there was no shortage of views on views on views.
When we got out of the car and headed towards a large open green field, complete with wild horses grazing, my 4-year-old, Ayva, said, “Eww, what’s that smell?” Sweetie, that’s nature. And pine. And it smells amazing. My little city girl. *face palm* We walked around and looked at the wild horses, and avoided their enormous piles of poo. Then we walked a little further towards the mountains and came up on the most magical view. It looked like a backdrop. I already told Chris we HAVE to come back for Christmas card photos this year. This is like a dream spot for that!
^^^ That view behind us is unreal. ^^^
Also, can we talk about Ayva’s little knee cut-outs in her jeans. ^^
Old Navy is killin’ it with the kids’ clothes, per usual.
Every single rock or tree stump we found, was a “stage”. And Chris picked up every single piece of trash on our walk. It was really upsetting to see how many water bottles were on the beautiful green grass. It looked like the lower grass area was washed out from rain, so I’m thinking trash just made it’s way from trash bins somewhere and ended up down fro the mountain. Either way, my super sweet hubby played trash pick-up for the day.
I cannot wait to go back! This time of year, it’s pretty empty as far as visitors, so it’s really nice to have the whole area to yourself most days. They even have little cabins to stay in and like I said, so much hiking. The kids are too young to enjoy all of that just yet, so for now, we’ll be enjoying the wild horses and huge green lawns to run around and play on. The best part, it’s only 30 minutes from our house and it was actually 30 degrees cooler! 101 vs 71 degrees that day we went. I am so thankful for mountains and elevation and all that jazz. Now we have this perfect little getaway from the desert heat.
