I guess first we need to introduce our newest family members to you all. We adopted two guinea pigs a few weeks ago and have been cuddling and loving on them everyday.
The kids are obsessed with them and I’m actually shocked at how gentle even Connor is with them. They’re pretty low maintenance, which is great for our family since we’re pretty busy. I always feel like I never have time to get things done, but somehow we always find plenty of time to cuddle these little guys. We named them Benny and Pepé. (Benny because the kids kept calling them “Benny pigs” and Pepé because he looks like a little skunk).

Anyway, we originally got a cage for them but later decided we wanted to create a bigger and more fun space for them. Are we crazy guinea pig people now? Probably. So my husband and oldest headed to a thrift store that is actually less than a mile from our house. They found this dresser and Chris got to work on transforming it into a guinea pig house.
He took the drawers out, cut some pieces out that we didn’t need and sanded it all down. He added more sturdy flooring on each level because what was in there was a flimsy cardboard like material. He coated each floor with a plastic spray so that it’s more durable against any moisture from the guinea pigs. He then cut out plexiglass for each level, which was probably the most expensive part of all of this. He also cut out the top and added a wire mesh to give them a little more airflow. Chris cut out two ramps for the guinea pigs to access each floor and we attached sticks we found outside for steps on those ramps. We painted the whole thing white to match our home furnishings a little more and hung their water bottles, food and hay bin, filled it with bedding, their tunnel and toys and they seem to love it! Check it out!
